Chambered nautilus

Nautilus pompilius

Appearing as a swimming snail with tentacles the chambered nautilus is a very odd creature indeed. Nautiluses are described as living fossils because they have remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. The very first nautiluses were jet propelling themselves through the seas about 500 million years ago – that’s 265 million years before dinosaurs inhabited the Earth.
