Gerenuk

Litocranius walleri

The name ‘gerenuk’ means ‘giraffe-necked’ in Somali but this endearing creature is actually a gazelle. Its grazing advantage of having an unusually long neck is enhanced by its ability to stand on its hind legs. They choose to eat the juiciest shoots and leaves, which can give them all the moisture they need. Amazingly, they can go their whole lives without ever taking a drink of water.
